What is THC-A and how is it legal?

THC-A (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in raw hemp. It is the precursor to Delta-9 THC, which is the primary psychoactive compound commonly referred to as “THC.” When THC-A is exposed to heat, it undergoes decarboxylation, converting into Delta-9 THC. However, under proper growing and storage conditions, decarboxylation can be minimized, preserving THC-A in its natural state and keeping the total Delta-9 THC below .3% by dry weight.

The 2018 Farm Bill distinguishes legal hemp from illegal marijuana based on the Delta-9 THC percentage by dry weight. As long as a product contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight, it is classified as hemp, regardless of its THC-A content. However, some states regulate THC-A differently, considering its potential to convert into Delta-9 THC. Be sure to check your local laws before purchasing THC-A products.
